Our Veterinarians

Monica Bunkenburg, DVM

Dr. Bunkenburg's Bio

Medical Director
Originally from Skaneateles, New York, Dr. Bunkenburg attended Arizona State University, where she received her bachelor’s degree in Agribusiness. She then attended the Louisiana State University School of Veterinary Medicine, where she earned her Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine. Dr. Bunkenburg spent the last eight years as an associate veterinarian at Suburban Animal Hospital.

As a Fear-Free Certified Veterinarian, she is interested in enhancing the human-animal bond, enriching the lives of pets and their families – additionally, she enjoys soft tissue surgery.

At home, she enjoys the company of her husband and a sassy, pastel calico kitty named Duchess. During her free time, she enjoys reading, trail walking, watching movies, tailgating, and anything LSU football.

Andrea Straka, VMD

Dr. Straka's Bio

Dr. Straka grew up in Reading, Pennsylvania. She attended the University of Delaware for her undergraduate degree. In 1993, she received her degree in Animal Science.

Dr. Straka went on to attend the University of Pennsylvania for veterinary school. She graduated cum laude in 1997 with her degree in Veterinary Medicine. She was also inducted into the Phi Zeta national honor society during her time at the University of Pennsylvania. She has a professional interest in animal behavior.

Dr. Straka has a pug named Martini, a Rhodesian Ridgeback named Penny, a cat named Nikki, a frog named Froggy and a fish named Melvin. She enjoys spending time with her family, including her husband Dan, her son Andrew and her daughter Sydney. In her free time Dr. Straka can be found reading, traveling, fishing, doing yoga, or playing baseball.

Sam Kalis, DVM

Dr. Kalis' Bio
Dr. Kalis was born on the Misawa, Japan Air Force base and grew up all over the place, from England to Germany to New Hampshire.

He received his BS in microbiology from Weber State University and was a veterinary technician for two years before receiving his doctorate from Washington State University.

Dr. Kalis is a big history buff, so outside of work, he enjoys exploring local sites and stories, as well as playing board games, playing Dungeons & Dragons, cooking, baking, camping, hiking, and reading. He doesn’t currently have any pets but is looking forward to hopefully getting a dog soon!

Dr. Psutka's Bio

Dr. Kathryn Psutka is an associate veterinarian at Irondequoit Animal Hospital. Raised in London, Ontario, Canada, she attended the University of Guelph and majored in biological science before receiving her doctorate of veterinary medicine from St. George’s University in 2012.

Dr. Psutka completed a clinical year at the University of Minnesota and a small animal rotating internship at the University of Illinois. Before joining Irondequoit Animal Hospital, she worked as an associate veterinarian at the North Texas Emergency Pet Clinic in Carrollton, Texas, and Animal Critical Care and Emergency Services in Lakewood, Colo.

Dr. Psutka’s professional interests include surgery and ophthalmology. She shares her home with two cats, Sheldon and Penny. In her spare time, she enjoys cooking, music, theatre, and SCUBA. She also spends her free time with her award-winning agility dog Vixen.

Jeannine Natale

Jeannine's Bio
Practice Manager

Jeannine was born in Rochester, NY but grew up right here in Irondequoit! She joined our team as our Client Service Representative Supervisor in January 2021.

Before joining our team, she had already worked in the animal care industry for 15 years! Jeannine is licensed by the NY DEC as a wildlife rehabilitator and has devoted 25 years to helping animals in need.

At home, Jeannine lives with her husband, Ken, to who she’s been married for over 30 years! She also has two sons, two wonderful daughters-in-law, and 4 grandchildren. Her fur baby family consists of Buster – a Boston Terrier, Mojo and Ellaboth Chihuahuas, and 4 Domestic Shorthair cats named Smudge, Brooklyn, Archie, and Willy.

In her free time, Jeannine enjoys spending time at her cottage where she boats and takes in the warm, Summer weather. Summer is a very busy time for wildlife, so it’s also when she usually raises and releases orphaned babies. Jeannine also volunteers for various animal rescue organizations and has fostered baby kittens!

Barb Swartzfager, LVT

Barb's Bio

Veterinary Technician Supervisor

Barb was born in Rochester and grew up right outside of it in Churchville, New York. She is a LVT supervisor and has been with Irondequoit Animal hospital for the past 20 years. Barb is licensed by the state of New York. She is also certified as a veterinary dental technician and is an adult leader for the explorer program at Monroe Veterinary Associates.

Her favorite part of being at Irondequoit Animal Hospital is working alongside her compassionate coworkers and taking care of all the animals she gets to see daily!

Barb enjoys spending her free time with her family, including her husband, Scott, and son, Jack, taking care of her home, gardening, trying new restaurants, cooking new recipes, and traveling. She also enjoys taking her Pit Bull mix, Otter, to the dog park. In addition to Otter, Barb also has two cats at home named Annie and Joey.

Mittens “Mitties” Schmitts

Mittens' Bio

Office Cat Extraordinaire

Mittens grew up right in Irondequoit Animal Hospital. His job at the hospital includes acting as a full-time greeter, but really only when he wants to. He has been in this position for the past five years. He has been in the animal field since he was born seven years ago. Mittens is the poster child for teeth-brushing and Irondequoit’s Facebook page.

Mittens loves Irondequoit because of all the attention he gets. The hospital has the best flowing water from the faucets … a cat’s dream. And there are so many to choose from!

Mittens shares his home with his “pets,” the Irondequoit Animal Hospital staff. In his free time, he likes to sleep and meow at his people. He also enjoys sitting in front of his staff’s workstations while they are busy and playing hide-n-seek when it is time to close or get his teeth brushed. Mittens loves the occasional belly rub as well.
